A former homeschooling mom with three grown kids, Laurie White is best known for her popular book King Alfred’s English: A History of the Language We Speak and Why We Should Be Glad We Do. When her last child graduated from high school, Laurie turned her focus to teaching English and world history at a private school, but it was when she launched into the research for her first book that she knew she’d found her educational niche. She now hosts a website with free supplementary materials for students, along with three books and a world history timeline with its accompanying “Pack of Tricks.” The Pack of Tricks is a unique approach to memorizing a basic framework for world history.
King Alfred’s English, has garnered a number of accolades, from being chosen as a top ten pick in the CBD 2010 Homeschool Catalog to being used for honors English in Idaho’s Logos Christian School. It has been picked up recently for a college class in introductory linguistics. The book is fun and funny as well as educational and was specifically written with the homeschooled student in mind.
Laurie lives with her husband in a log house in the middle of the woods outside of Atlanta, Georgia where learning to load and fire a flintlock rifle was part of their children’s homeschool curriculum. Besides keeping up her website and writing, she now works with adult literacy students. But her heart is in giving back to the homeschooling community that nurtured the independent thinking, the exuberance for learning, and most of all the faith in Christ which she sees flourishing in the lives of her own kids today.
